Today we went to the beach! De Soto National Monument is a county park with amazing sand bars and interesting sea life. After two days on the road, it was nice to be able to relax with friends.

Beach, booze and birds were the theme of the day. We’d set up out on the sand bar where there were fewer people; our main company was the occasional plover, pelican, seagull (not as big or annoying as those in the UK) and osprey. The sea was beautifully blue - and warm! We put on goggles and went diving for sand dollars, it turns out I am RUBBISH at finding them….. I’m going to put it down to lack of practice but all the Americans found at least 10 each and I found 2 (one of those Asa put back in the water for me to find!). You can probably guess which ones we kept!
As the tide went out, the water exposed some more interesting sea creatures - we saw starfish, sea slugs and huge cockles that we originally thought were scallops. Low tide also bought some entertainment - some of the larger shiny boats with triple engines had miscalculated the depth of the waterways back out to the gulf and had beached themselves and their efforts to power off into deeper water were futile. With high tide not until 1:30am, they left their boats where they were until the next day.
We sat on the sand bar until the sun set which was honestly one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen. It was made even better being with good friends and a bottle of our Riesling wedding wine.

A perfect Saturday ended with home cooked food, more wine and an intense game of jenga - we finally got to use our wedding set!
it was so nice to read all the comments while praying it didn’t fall down on your go!
