It is not “normal” to convert a bus. The sensible thing to do if one is thinking about converting a bus is to go get a used RV instead. It will likely be a headache, but it probably won’t be the same kind of ordeal.

Design Goals

  • To be as self-contained as possible, and able to boondock for extended periods of time. We don’t want to have to chart a course between RV hookups!
  • To be a comfortable living space. This means a well-equipped kitchen, a comfy bed, and the ability to take a hot indoor shower if we really want one
  • To have ample indoor storage space for bikes and tools. As we are heading towards the remoter parts of the lower 48, we need to be able to perform basic repairs on site, or load up on touring bikes and ride to the nearest town if we get stranded or stuck

Key features:

  • 1.2 kW roof-mounted solar
  • 3 kW inverter
  • 4.5 kWh 12v lithium ion battery banks
  • LED interior lighting
  • 46 gallon freshwater tank
  • 75 gallon gray water tank
  • Tankless propane hot water heater
  • 24" propane stove and oven
  • Double sink
  • 4.3 cubic foot mini fridge
  • One person shower
  • 55 gallon composting toilet
  • Rocket stove heater (aka Reggie the Rocket Toad)
  • Rear “garage” with work bench, tool and bike storage
  • Whole bus sound system!
